PLA vs ABS vs PETG: Which 3D Printing Material Is Best?

When it comes to 3D printing, one of the most common questions beginners ask is: which filament should I use? The three most popular options — PLA, ABS, and PETG — each have distinct properties that make them suited for different applications. Here's what you need to know.

 

PLA (Polylactic Acid) is the most beginner-friendly filament available. Made from renewable resources like cornstarch, PLA is biodegradable, easy to print, and comes in a huge variety of colors. It prints at lower temperatures (around 190–220°C) and doesn't require a heated bed, making it ideal for simple prints, decorative items, and prototypes. The downside? PLA is brittle and doesn't handle heat well — leave a PLA print in a hot car and you might come back to a warped mess.

 

ABS (Acrylonitrile Butadiene Styrene) is the material used in LEGO bricks, and for good reason. It's tough, impact-resistant, and can handle higher temperatures than PLA. However, ABS is notoriously difficult to print — it warps easily, requires a heated bed (around 100°C), and releases fumes that require ventilation. For experienced makers who need durable, functional parts, ABS is worth the extra effort.

 

PETG (Polyethylene Terephthalate Glycol) sits right between PLA and ABS in terms of difficulty and performance. It's stronger than PLA, more flexible than ABS, and resists moisture and chemicals. PETG is excellent for functional parts, food-safe containers (when using appropriate printers), and anything that needs a bit of flex. It prints at moderate temperatures and is relatively easy to work with.

 

So which should you choose? For beginners and decorative prints: PLA. For tough, heat-resistant parts: ABS. For functional, durable items with a balance of ease: PETG.
